Murali Baggu

Manger of Power Systems Operations and Control Group

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Dr. Murali Baggu is the Manager of the Energy Systems Optimization and Control Group at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). He currently leads the NREL Grid Modernization Initiatives’ (GMI’) ADMS efforts at NREL. He also leads the US-China Climate Change Working Group’s Smart Grid efforts at NREL. He has extensive experience in advanced grid control and evaluation for future power systems with high penetrations of distributed energy resources. This includes ADMS, microgrid applications, and energy-storage applications.  Most recently, he led the NREL SDG&E cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) work that provided research and testing support to address SDG&E needs in energy storage demonstration, cost-benefit analysis, performance testing, and Power Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation. He was also project manager for the NREL Duke Energy CRADA work to identify the operational impacts of high penetration of PV in Duke Energy’s territory with GE's (formerly Alstom) E-terra Distribution Management System, where he managed all communications and interactions with the customers. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Lead Power Systems Engineer at GE Global Research, Niskayuna, NY, where he developed advanced Volt/VAR control and DER management algorithms. At GE, he also led the technology development deployment of large-scale energy storage integration with photovoltaic systems for Department of Defense Marine Corps installations. He has four patents and several publications in these areas.
